Grassy Woodlands Project
A Grassy Woodland is dominated by eucalypts, typically boxes and red gums and have a relatively open canopy with sparsely distributed understorey shrubs and a conspicuous and diverse ground cover of native grasses and herbs.
The Grassy Woodlands Project aims to improve the condition, extent and connectivity of Grassy Woodlands within the South West Slopes Biogeographical region, focussing on priority areas within the West Hume Landcare area. The project commenced in 2019, and is delivered in partnership with Holbrook Landcare Network, Corowa District Landcare and Murray Local Land Services and is funded by Catchment Action NSW.
In 2019/20 West Hume Landcare has worked alongside 7 local landholders to achieve the protection and enhancement at 9 sites of over 12ha of existing Grassy Woodlands and created nearly 8ha of new Grassy Woodlands patches and corridors in our area. Over 3500 native plants have been planted and wildlife friendly fencing has been installed to protect the plants from stock grazing. This totals over 20ha of privately owned land within the priority areas now under agreement.
Expressions of Interest are now open for 2020/21 funding round. We are again looking to work with Landholders within the West Hume Landcare region to protect, enhance and connect Grassy Woodlands, with a target of 20ha under agreement. If you are interested in taking part in the project and your land falls within the priority areas, please submit an EOI form by 19 October 2020 or contact our Project Officer for more information.
