Protecting our paddock trees
West Hume Landcare recently subsidised the purchase of 105 stock proof tree guards, in collaboration with the Squirrel Glider LAMP project.
These guards will protect the next generation of paddock trees, which will provide shelter and shade for stock as well as habitat for native wildlife such as our beloved squirrel gliders, bats, birds, reptiles and insects. When planted strategically, these trees can become important ‘stepping stones’ for assisting wildlife to move across our agricultural landscapes.
Don’t forget to look after our existing big old paddock trees as well. These hollow bearing trees, critical for our wildlife, are becoming increasingly rare due to a variety of reasons.
